~Sheri (Beaverson) Deerhake, Owner~
Sheri has worked in the restaurant business since her first job, at the age of fourteen, at The Dairy Isle in Belle Center ,Ohio. Throughout high school she worked in both a family style restaurant on Indian Lake and a hand dipped ice cream parlor in Huntsville. Upon moving to Columbus in 1987 to attend The Ohio State University, Sheri obtained a position at The Refectory Restaurant. This is where she began her career in fine dining, which later evolved into creating fine pastries and desserts. Over the next few years, she continued gaining experience as Pastry Chef and later Chef at Deja Vu Cafe and Pastry Chef at Baci (both restaurants are now closed). Sheri began creating wedding cakes when she started working for Delicacies in 1992. After ten years, she became owner of Delicacies by Sheri. Since that time she has strived to provide the highest quality of specialty desserts possible in a friendly, inviting atmosphere with special attention given to each customer's individual needs. Sheri and her husband of eight years, Steve, reside in North Columbus with their giant schnauzer, Woody, and their newest addition, Mickey Pi (a lhasa apso papillon mix).
~Sarah Bichon~
Sarah began working with Sheri in 1996 to pursue an interest in baking while she attended The Ohio State University. Since then, Sarah has received her degree and currently teaches Family Consumer Science for Whitehall City Schools. She is currently on sabbatical, but fully intends to come back when the kids go to school. Her specialties include decorating wedding cakes and cut-out cookies. Sarah and her husband of eight years, Jarrod, reside in Westerville with their two children, Leah and Harrison, as well as their Labrador retrievers, Auggie and Roscoe. They are expecting their third child at the end of the year.
~Darryl Kelley~
Darryl and Sheri began working together in 1997. Darryl is responsible for keeping the bakery clean and organized; according to him this is no small task! Over the years he has become a consummate cookie baker and is now primarily responsible for all of the buttercream production for the bakery. He also plays an integral part in cake baking and is especially good with chocolate cake. In his free time, Darryl enjoys participating in various Special Olympics activities (he really likes soft ball), playing bingo and going to dances. He has been a member of the National Special Olympics Volleyball Team for the past few years and is looking forward to possibly attending the world games- in China!
~Jenny Winslow - Rosato~
Jenny joined the team in 2002 and has since become very important to the smooth day to day functioning of Delicacies by Sheri. With lots of restaurant experience and training behind her, Jenny has quickly adapted to and thrived in the world of specialty desserts and wedding cakes. Co-incidentally, Jenny and Sheri both apprenticed under the same chef, Donald E. Hauck, CEC, about ten years apart though! She is very talented as a painter and now almost exclusively applies the finishing touches of color on all of the delicate white chocolate flowers, getting the blending and shading as close to reality as possible. She is pretty much a jack of all trades and fills in for Sheri whenever needed. Jenny and her husband, Chris, live in North Columbus with their dog, Bucco, and four cats, Pepper, Onyx, Scat and Sheba. Chris is the chef at The Golf Club in New Albany, making them a very talented cooking team!
~Thomas Bell~
Thomas is currently attending Columbus State Community College, studying advanced math (!) and deciding the direction he wants his career to take. He began working at Delicacies by Sheri as a high school sophomore experiential learning student. Since that time, Thomas has really come into his own as a baker and is an invaluable asset to the team. He recently single handedly supervised and produced an order of 800 cut-out cookies within 2 days- and managed not to burn even one (a rare feat for even the most experienced bakers!)! Thomas enjoys cycling, music and partying (like all college students!) in his free time.
~Karen Burson~
Karen came on staff two years ago (when Sheri broke her knee and needed all the help she could get!) and has since become an invaluable asset. Delicacies by Sheri made Karen's wedding cake- as well as her two sisters' cakes- and we just sort of roped her in a few years later! As well as playing a support roll in the kitchen, she has taken over the much needed position of marketing director. Her ideas and implementation will help to propel Delicacies by Sheri to the next level of success- maybe even a Food Network Challenge! Karen lives in Worthington with her husband, Gene, and their two children, Ava and Grant.
~Keara Mayton~
Keara came to us in 2007 as an intern from Linworth Alternative School. After only one week, it was clear that her artistic talents made her a must have addition to our staff! Because she is a high school sophomore, her work hours are limited to Saturdays and vacations, but her talents continue to develop weekly and we see a great future in store for her! Keara's specialties include working with white chocolate (difficult for even the most experienced baker) and cookie production. On her free time, she enjoys hanging out with friends and taking various art classes.
~Brenda Beaverson~
Brenda is the most recent addition to our staff (although, since she's Sheri's mother she's been around from the start!). Her tremendous challenge is to keep the bookkeeping in order (a task that Sheri avoids like the plague) and to make sure that all of the administrative aspects of the business are handled in a timely manner. Brenda lives in Belle Center, Ohio with Sheri's father, Roger (who can always be counted upon for brilliant ideas and advice). She enjoys spending time with her granddaughters- Gracie, Megan and Emily- and cleaning up after Libby, the new puppy.
~Seasonal Employees~
~Seth Warren~
Seth began working at Delicacies by Sheri in 2002 as a high school sophomore at The Graham School in the experiential learning program. Very early on it was apparent that Seth had what it takes to become a successful chef. He graduated from high school in 2005 and is a recent graduate of the Chef's Apprentice Program at Columbus State Community College. He is currently thriving at Rosendale's and Cameron Mitchell Catering. Despite his busy schedule, he comes in to help whenever needed.
~Megan Bell~
Megan (Thomas' older sister) began helping out in December, 2004. She is a graduate student studying Vocal Performance at Bowling Green State University and lends a hand whenever she's in town. Megan's specialties include creating intricate white chocolate snowflakes, decorating cookies and making flowers. She is currently planning her wedding in May of 2009 (what a cake we have planned for her!).
Delicacies by Sheri is extremely fortunate to be able to call on a number of talented people when things get busy. Sheri's best friend since sixth grade, Kathe DeVault, has been known to make the long drive from Ada (where she is Resident Lighting Designer for Ohio Northern University) to cut out cookies, make flowers and even do paperwork and filing. Sheri's husband, Steve, will help out with deliveries and occasionally can be convinced to get his hands dirty in the kitchen. Mother-in-law Georgia Deerhake will fill in at the cash register when everyone else has to be out on deliveries. Lee Immel, Michi Dague and Anne Warren (Seth's mom!) can also be depended upon to help in a pinch- especially in December! We strive to have fun and enjoy what we do and we feel that this comes through in the items we produce.
